3rd May 2026 @ Headcorn Aerodrome
The start of the MMKMC autotest season is always marked with the taster day at Headcorn Aerodrome, a chance for you to come and see what grassroots motorsport actually means, with your only outlay being time to get your FREE (yes really £0.00) RS Clubman licence from Motorsport UK (if you could do it before you get to taster day that would be appreciated)
Ideally you need to bring a nimble car along which has a proper handbrake – think Toyota Yaris, Mazda MX5, Citroen C2, Citroen C1, Ford Focus, Ford KA, Classic Mini, Older BMW Mini’s, Suzuki Swift, Nissan Micra, Vauxhall Corsa – you get the idea. As it is taster day some of our members may let you have a try in their cars – but that’ll be dependent on the day.
In the morning we’ll look at what an autotest is, and move into practicing the principles – positioning, turning, speeds, starting, finishing etc. In the afternoon we’ll move on to using what’s been learned in the morning and having a go in a competition like environment.
“I want to have a go but i’m 13” – excellent – 13 is the age at which you can start autotesting, with a suitable qualified (has a driving licence) parent with you.
“I want to have a go, but i’m not a junior, but don’t have a driving licence” – well apart from needing to source a lift to get to Headcorn, if someone is willing to let you drive their car, providing your lack of road licence isn’t because you’re banned, then there is nothing stopping you from having a try.
“We haven’t got a motorsport capable car” – see that list above! MMKMC is a StreetCar club, which is an initiative from Motorsport UK to make events accessible to “shopping cars”. After her first taste of autotesting, one of our members bought a road legal Micra for £350 – that was in 2019 and it was used a few times in events last year.
“I’m disabled, so I can’t do it” – in 2024 and 2025, MMKMC ran one of the Motorsport UK Disability Driver Scholarship cars, and we have several active members today with their own converted vehicles who subscribe to the “disability doesn’t define what I can do” mantra. We can’t promise that there would be a car available on taster day, but that shouldn’t stop you from talking to us if you’re interested.
“It costs a fortune to do motorsport” – well after taster day you need to be a member of a club to keep competing – MMKMC is £20/year for a family membership (up to 5 people). For autotesting this year (2026), adult entry is £20 per evening autotest event, and junior entry is FREE (that word again!). There are other clubs in the South East that run evening grass autotests, and the entry fees can be up to £25 for adults.
If you’ve got any more questions about it, then use our contact form and someone will be back in touch as soon as they can.
3rd May, Sunday, Headcorn Aerodrome – Go on, what’s the worst that could happen?
